M64 motorway

The M64 motorway was planned in the 1970s to link the M6 at Stoke, and the M1 near Castle Donington, via Uttoxeter and Derby -- allowing NW-London traffic to avoid the busy M6 around Birmingham. It was cancelled in 1976, and the A50 was built in the 1990s instead, following roughly the same route.
