Economic activity until 1960

Up until 1960, the cities' main income was generated by the harbour it is situated round. The city inhabited lots of fishermen who fished mainly at the coast of the North Sea and the coast of Iceland. Also, there is still a big ships agency called Dirkzwager.

The city was also the home of the Tug Boat company Smit-Tak.

Like a lot of other countries in the Netherlands, the active working population was transferred to Germany for working in the war industry. Maassluis' ancient church suffered a lot in the second world war when it was bombed by allied bombers.
