Mahabad, IranMahabad is a city in Iranian Kurdistan, it lies 837 km west from the capital of Iran, Tehran. It was briefly the capital city of the Kurdish republic of Mehabad, which declared its independence on January 1 1946 under the leadership of Qazi Muhammad. The republic fell when the USSR relinquished support in 1947.
