Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is near Oceanside, California.

The United States Marine Corps established the base on the Pacific Ocean coast north of San Diego in Southern California in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. The base is named after Marine General Joseph Henry Pendleton, who long advocated setting up a West Coast training base for the Marine Corps.

The Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores was the largest in California, over 200 square miles, and originally belonged to the family of Pio Pico, changing hands until the Marine Corps takeover.

The Las Flores Adobe was built in 1867 and is an example of the Monterey style that blends Mexican adobe with certain New England architectural elements. It is currently administered by the Boy Scouts of America and is a National Historic Landmark.
