Mehdi Karroubi

Mehdi Karroubi

Mehdi Karroubi (in Persian: مهدی کروبی) (born 1939?) is an Iranian politician, the chairman and a founding member of the Militant Clerics Society party. He was the Speaker of the Iranian parliament from 2000 to 2004, and from 1989 to 1992, but withdrew from 2004 parliamentary elections. He is among the possible candidates of the reformists for the presidential elections of 2005.

Karroubi is a critic of Guardian Council but at the same time supports the Supreme Leader, and calls himself a follower of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He is currently a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, by appointment of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Karroubi is always grouped with the Reformist element but he is more than a little pragmatic in that he seeks to affect change from within the system.
