Menard County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 2,360. Its county seat is Menard6. Menard County is named for Michel Branamour Menard, the founder of Galveston, Texas.

Geography


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,337 km² (902 mi²). 2,336 km² (902 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

    Demographics


    As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,360 people, 990 households, and 665 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 1,607 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.54% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 9.79% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 31.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

    There are 990 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.80% are non-families. 30.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.91.

    In the county, the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 21.90% from 25 to 44, 26.60% from 45 to 64, and 21.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.

    The median income for a household in the county is $24,762, and the median income for a family is $30,872. Males have a median income of $21,953 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,987. 25.80% of the population and 20.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.90% of those under the age of 18 and 19.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
