Mir of Hunza
Mir is a Persian word, synonymous with emir, which means leader of a group or tribe. In the tribal societies of the Indian Subcontinent many people used this word with their names, to signify leadership. The rulers of Hunza used the word “Mir” with their names for 950 years. In 1974 the state became a part of the Northern Areas of Pakistan under the Pakistani Federal Government. The last Mir of Hunza was Mir Muhammad Jamal Khan. The use of the title Mir of Hunza is now associated with seperatist groups in the region. The government of Pakistan has made the use of this title illegal and the ultimate sanctions include charges of treason and incitement to mutiny, which are capital crimes under Pakistani law.
