Mundilfari (moon)

Mundilfari (moon)

Mundilfari (moon'-dil-fair'-ee, Norse Mundilfäri) is a natural satellite of Saturn. It was discovered by Brett J. Gladman, et al. in 2000, and given the temporary designation S/2000 S 9. Mundilfari is about 5.6 kilometers in diameter, and orbits Saturn at an average of 18,709,000 kilometers in a retrograde direction. It is also designated as Saturn XXV.

Mundilfari may have formed from debris knocked off of Phoebe by large impacts at some point in the solar system's history.

Its name comes from Norse mythology, where Mundilfari is a Jotun or giant who is the father of the goddess Sol and the god Mani.
