Nairn

Nairn

Nairn District 1975-96

Nairn (Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Narann) is a burgh in the Scottish Highlands, lying about fifteen miles east of Inverness. Although an ancient fishing port and market town, formerly split into Scottish Gaelic- and Lowland Scots-speaking communities, with a harbour built by Thomas Telford, it is now best known as a seaside resort, with a golf links and a small museum.

From 1975 Nairn gave its name to a local government district in the Highland Region of Scotland. Before that, it was the county town of Nairnshire.

In 1996 administrative functions were taken over the Highland unitary council.
(See: Subdivisions of Scotland.)
The name is retained as a Lieutenancy Area.
