Nam Phuong

Empress Nam Phuong (Marie-Therese Nguyen Huu Hao) was born on December 4, 1914, in Saigon, Vietnam. She is the daughter of Duke Pierre Nguyen Huu-Hao and Duchess Marie Le Thi Binh of Long-My, Vietnam.

She studied at the Convent des Oiseaux in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.

On March 20, 1934, Emperor Bao Dai married Marie-Therese and they had four children, Bao Long, Phuong Mai, Phuong Lien, and Phuong Dong.

On March 24, 1934, Emperor Bao Dai bestowed her the name and title of Nam Phuong (Empress of the South).

On January 4, 1936, Empress Nam Phuong gave birth to their first child, Crown Prince Bao Long.
Empress Nam Phuong served as a member of the Reconstruction Committee for Vietnam after the end of World War II.

In 1947, Empress Nam Phuong left Vietnam with her children and lived at the Chateau Thorenz outside of Cannes, France.
On September 15, 1963, she passed away at Chateau La Pesche, France.
