Nanning

Nanning () is the capital of Guangxi autonomous region in southern China. Population (2004): 880,400.

Geography

Nanning is located in southern China, 160 km from the border with Vietnam.

History

In 1914, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region moved from Guilin to Nanning.

Economy

The GDP per capita was ¥16,121 (ca. US$1,950) in 2003, ranked no. 116 among 659 Chinese cities.

Tourism

Nanning is the jumping off point for scenic Guilin, with its world famous hillscape.

  • Deng Yingchao (1904-1992), Chairwoman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference from 1983 to 1988. Sometimes considered one of the Eight Immortals of Communist China, she was not related to Deng Xiaoping
  • Zhou Mi (born 1979), a female badminton player
