Niagara Region, Ontario

Niagara Region, Ontario

The Niagara Region of southern Ontario, Canada consists largely of the Niagara peninsula. It comprises the counties or districts of Brant, Haldimand, Niagara, and Norfolk.

Its eastern boundary is the Niagara River, which is also the boundary with the United States. It is bounded on the north by Lake Ontario and on the south by Lake Erie. Important cities in the region are Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, and Welland.

The most important agricultural enterprise in Niagara is viticulture.

The Welland Canal traverses Niagara from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario to allow shipping to avoid Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls and the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake make the region an important tourist destination.
