NIT Trichy

The National Institute of Technology at Tiruchirappalli, NIT Trichy, (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) is situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery. It was started as a joint and cooperative venture between the Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964.

About


National Institute of Technology Trichy is one of the 17 National Institutes of Technology engineering college's established by the Indian government. Today, NITT is an autonomous co-educational engineering college, with 10 undergraduate, 22 graduate programs. Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech degrees,
while the graduate students and postgraduate students earn M.Tech and Ph.D degrees
respectively. NIT-T also has a management and architecture school. NITT is located in Thuvakudi which is in the Tiruchy-Tanjore highway, some 17 Km from Trichy.

History


The College has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. Later in 2003 it was granted Deemed University Status. RECT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. NITT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975. Formerly RECT's management was looked after by the Board of Governors consisting of Honorable Minister for Education, Government of Tamil Nadu as Chairman, and Members from Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India, AICTE, UGC, IIT, Chennai and Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. The current Chairman i/c of NITT is from IIT Madras.

Academics


Admissions to the undergraduate course is competitive, and through the AIEEE. Admission to the post-graduate programs are done using the scores from GATE. Generally the undergraduate students are better equipped and opportunistic than the graduate students. The alumni of the institution have excelled in various spheres and are well positioned in a number of government and private sectors.

The Institute has several departments along with a faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical support staff and an effective administration.

    Campus


    Residential facilities are provided for most of the students and staff in the spacious college campus of about 800 acres. Essential basic amenities like Hospital, Post & Telegraph, Telecom Center, fully computerized State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Book stall, Reprographic Center, Canteen, Co-op. Stores etc. are also available in the Campus.

NITT campus is spread across 800 acres of land, with residential facilities for almost all of its studets. The ten departments buildings, labs, auditoriums, playgrounds, and paved roads, well lit streets, shopping centre, banking & postal services within the campus, make NITT a mini township in itself. The campus has a Hospital, Post & Telegraph, Telecom Center, fully computerized State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Book stall, Reprographic Center, Canteen, Co-op store which are moderately useful. The built area is however is 40-50 acres or less.

NITT has Campus-wide Local Area Network with number of systems to provide computer training to 900 students at a time, 2mbps Internet connection through STPi are available in the Octagon computer center. This center is open 24 hours a day for use by students and staff.

The computer support facilities provided in NIT-T are competitive in Indian educational institutes. NIT-T has the Octagon which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year. Octagon generally uses Microsoft Windows as its preferred OS, although it runs all the web and email servers, on GNU/Linux systems, and has a new SUN sponsored lab running Solaris.

Student life


The spirit of being in NITT is the freedom one gets, to explore life, without compulsions, without any crushing force from the academic pressures; generally people pursue one or more skills, join clubs and groups to work for their own self something disconnected from academics.

Extracurricular activities include participation in NCC, NSS, Students Chapters of IEEE. Modern Gymnasium and sport facilities are also available in the campus.
Prominent events at NITT include Festember, a 3 day cultural extravaganza for colleges in the region. Technical symposiums are conducted by the departments, during the months of January to March, every year.

    Location


    NITT is located about 16 km from Tiruchurapalli Jn / Central Bus-stand on the Trichy-Thanjavur Highway. The simplest and most economical way to reach NITT is by bus. Any city bus at the Tiruchirapalli Jn will take you to the central bus stand. By boarding a Thanjavur bound mofussiful or route bus, the journey time from Trichy will be around 45 minutes.

Trichy is connected by road to Madras (320 km), Madurai (142 km) and to all major towns in South India by regular bus services. Tiruchirapalli is an important junction on the Southern Railway. It connects Madras, Thanjavur, Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirupati and Rameswaram on the meter gauge, and Bangalore, Coimbatore, Cochin and Mangalore on the broad gauge. It has an international airport, 7 kms away, and is connected with Chennai (Madras), Madurai, Singapore, Colombo, Kuwait, Sharjah and Bangalore. Indian Airlines connects Trichy with Chennai, Sharjah, Kuwait and Colombo. Air Lanka Service connects Tiruchirapalli with Colombo.
