Nong Duc Manh

Nông Ðức Mạnh is the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and has held that position since April 22, 2001.

His official biography says that he was the son of peasants of the ethnic group tay and that he was born on September 11, 1940, in Cuong Loi, Na Ri District, Bac Kan province. However, some say he is the illegitimate son of Ho Chi Minh himself.

He is viewed by many as a moderniser and has announced that he wants Vietnam to become an industrialised country by 2020.
