Nozeh coup
An attempted coup begun on July 9, 1980 supported by the Iraqi government to overthrow the revolutionary government in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The coup was supported by Saddam Hussein in response to attempts of the Iranian government to stir up Shi'a opposition against Saddam's Ba'ath party and the attempted assassination of Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz at al-Mustansiriyah University which resulted in the death of 11 iraqi students. The coup, launched from the Nozeh Air Force Base, was carried out by Iranian expatriots invited to and fully supported by Iraq. Its spectacular failure led to a number of arrests and an extensive purge of the Iranian armed forces. The coup was seen as the last chance the Iraqi regime had to topple Ayatollah Khomeini's regime from within.
