Nugatory

Nugatory

In general use, the adjective nugatory means trifling, insignificant, or inconsequential. The account paid only a nugatory rate of interest, for example, means that the interest was negligible.

In law, nugatory means having no force, inoperative, or ineffectual. A statute which is unconstitutional is a nugatory law, for example.

In computer science, nugatory is a jargon expression for a something that may be safely left out of a computer program, but will do no harm if left in.
