Nybble-Engine

Nybble-Engine

Nybble-Engine is the project name for a series of game arts works based on
a game engine crack. The code-artists collective consisting of Max
Moswitzer (Vienna) and Margarete Jahrmann (Zurich) was publishing the
modding of the Unreal game engine interwoven with Linux commandos under
the label www.climax.at.

Their background is video art, neo conceptual
arts and network based software art. Since 1996 the artists run the konsum
slackerserver, www.konsum.net. Since 2001 they started touring with all
versions of artistic computer game modification . Their speciality became
live gigs called modular lectures using modificated game engines as
visualisation tool for network processes and theory machines.

Climax.at started their game modification work in 1999 with LinX3D, a game
console combinated with an ASCII videocamera. A number of consols were
exhibited simultanously at several arts space and networked online
different kinds of text, as ascii images, transfer protocolls, user
logfiles and sci fi stories. With the combinatorial interfaces of game
interface situation in exhibitions and turned software and interface ad
absurdum. As recently in the dance machine or before the software art
award winning Anti-war Shooter Nybble-Engine-ToolZ, developed in
cooperation with the V2 lab Rotterdam, sending anti war e-mails to
president@whitehouse.gov with each shoot in a network game.
The climax.at works seem to deconstruct semantic information for the merit
of aesthetic information. Climax works consist of hardwarehacking trash
interfaces and modding in all kinds of codes, rules, cultural software und
software cultures.

Although their work was awarded in international festivals and
exhibitions, including transmediale 2004, ars electronica 2003, dutch
electronic arts festival and ZKM, due to permanent change and a radical
relational multilayer orientation no specific theoretician or institution
ever constantly included it in their body of reference.
