NYU School of Law

The New York University School of Law (or simply NYU Law) is one of eight law schools in New York City. It is generally considered to be among the top six law schools in the United States, and is ranked fifth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

The school is located in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood. It was founded in 1835, making it the oldest of New York's (and one of the America's oldest) law schools. It is home to 1,700 students pursuing J.D, LL.M and J.S.D. degrees. Richard Revesz is the school's dean. Some of its best-known professors include Thomas Nagel, Ronald Dworkin, Derrick Bell, Stephen Schulhofer,Burt Neuborne, and Mark Geistfeld.

NYU Law is particularly strong in criminal law, environmental law, international law and tax law, and offers many courses in these areas. It also offers a well-respected LL.M in taxation. A great deal of top tax attorneys and professors hold NYU degrees. NYU publishes eight student-edited law journals, which are, in order of their founding: New York University Law Review, Annual Survey of American Law,Journal of International Law and Politics, Review of Law & Social Change, Journal of Environmental Law, Journal of Legislation & Public Policy, Journal of Law & Liberty and Journal of Law & Business.

There are also four faculty-edited journals, and the law school's moot court board also publishes a well-regarded moot court casebook.

Furman Hall, its newest building, was opened on January 22, 2004 and is named for a successful alumnus and donor, Jay Furman.

Alumni can be found throughout the legal world, filling top positions in prestigious public service law foundations, law firms, businesses, and government organizations. Famous elected alumni include Governor Samuel J. Tilden, former New York City mayors Fiorello La Guardia, Ed Koch and Rudy Guiliani; Senators Lamar Alexander, Rudy Boschwitz and Jacob Javits; and many Representatives, including Mitchell Jenkins, Jefferson Monroe Levy and Isaac Siegel. NYU School of Law is one of the only elite law schools never to have one of its alumni serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States.

In 2005, NYU Law entered into an agreement with the Osgoode Hall Law School, in Toronto, Canada, that will allow select students to obtain a joint-LL.B and JD, studying at both schools, in four years.
