Oguz Aral

Oguz Aral

Oğuz Aral (1936 in Silivri, Istanbul - July 26, 2004 in Mugla Province, Bodrum) was a Turkish political cartoonist, the founder of Girgir (Fun) magazine with his brother, and creator of such characters as "Avanak Avni" (Gullible Avni), "Kostebek Husnu" (Mole Husnu), "Utanmaz Adam" (Shameless Man), and "Vites Husnu" (Gearbox Husnu).

Called the "godfather" of Turkish cartoonists, Aral mentored scores of young artists, helping them publish their comics. Girgir, known for copy that was critical of all social ills, was banned after the 1980 military coup due to his outspoken opposition of its leaders, but his cartoons still ran in the paper Hurriyet until his death. He is survived by a son.
