One (Metallica song)One is the fourth song on Metallica's 1988 album ...And Justice for All. The music video first appeared on MTV on June 20th, 1988. The song has been a fixture of the band's live show, often preceded by fireworks as the intro is played. The opening A-G modulation was based on a song called "Buried Alive" by the band Venom. It was the first single released by Metallica to have a video, a move which led to accusations of "selling out" from a number of the band's fans. "One" was covered by nu-metallists Korn as a secret track in Take a Look in the Mirror. "One" is also ranked #7 on Guitar World's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos, just below Guns 'N Roses's November Rain. InterpretationThe intepretation is quite easy to understand when having seen the video which shows that "One" is inspired by the Movie "Johnny Got His Gun" "One" is, just as the movie, about a young man (in the movie, his name is Joe Bonham) who lost his arms, eyes, ears, voice and legs in the first World War and then isn't able to deal with that until he finally manages to communicate with the world. He often thinks that he should be taken off of life support since he cannot communicate with anyone or sense much around him anyway. The song is preceded both on albums and in live shows by the sounds of a vicious battle, complete with machine gun fire, explosions, soliders barking orders and screaming in agony, and a helicopter flying overhead (unusual considering the source material's setting in World War I, when there were no combat helicopters).
