Our Lady of Rosario of Chiquinquirá

Our Lady of Rosario of Chiquinquirá

On November 18th 1709 a small wooden board arrived at the shores of Lake Maracaibo, it was taken by an old lady from "El Saladillo" (An urbanization in Maracaibo).

The old lady made a living by washing other people's clothes, a job she did every morning at the shores of the lake; in that morning as usual she took the bult of clothes and walked down street to the lake and started washing the clothes. This old lady was washing the clothes when she saw the wooden board floating towards her. She picked it up thinking it might be of some use.

When she finished washing the clothes, she went home with the clothes and the board and a small vase with fresh water. Once she arrived home she put the clothes aside and put the board on top the vase to protect the water from dust and mosquitos, she noticed a small figure in the board but she couldnt tell what it was.

So she went outside after puting the board on top of the vase and fell asleep, when she woke up it was already late and it was dark, so she went outside to a local "abasto" to buy some candles to light her house. On her walk back she noticed there was a small gathering of people outside her house, when she walked to them the house was filled with light, when she and some of the neighboors went inside they saw the small wooden board floating in the air surrounded by light with a bright crisp picture of the Virgin Mary, everyone was amazed and called it a Miracle.

Since that day the avenue where she lived was renamed "El Milagro" which means Miracle in spanish, and to this day it is one of the most important avenues in Maracaibo
