Painted Post, New York

Painted Post is a village located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,842. The name comes from a painted and carved post found explorers at the junction of three local rivers.

The Village of Painted Post is in the Town of Erwin, west of the City of Corning.

History

The village was officially incorporated in 1893. The name is derived from an historic, although probably unpainted, wooden post seen in the area at the end of the 18th Century.

Geography

Painted Post is located at 42°9'40" North, 77°5'29" West (42.161188, -77.091315). Painted Post is west of the City of Corning, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,842 people, 811 households, and 480 families residing in the village. The population density is 564.4/km² (1,457.0/mi²). There are 879 housing units at an average density of 269.4/km² (695.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.71% White, 1.36% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.74% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 0.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 811 households out of which 27.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 84.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $41,477, and the median income for a family is $58,295. Males have a median income of $39,519 versus $26,583 for females. The per capita income for the village is $23,664. 5.2% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
