Peberholm

Peberholm

Peberholm, literally "Pepper islet", is an artificial island which was built as part of the Oresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden. The islet was constructed in proximity of the small natural island of Saltholm (Salt islet) and was named to complement it.

Peberholm is protected by strong laws and only biologists are allowed to visit the island — once a year — outside the boundaries of the railroad and highway that the island was created for.

The island is a biological experiment. It is intended that nature will colonize and make the island flourish on its own, without human interaction. Peberholm is built up off soil from the deep of the Öresund which was left over when the Öresund Bridge was built. In the soil many strange, extinct or uncommon seeds were buried and the island is rich in many very rare plants.
