Popcorn (play)
Play written by Ben Elton in 1996, which can be seen as inspired by a number of movies from the mid-1990’s, most notably Natural Born Killers by Oliver Stone and Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs by Quentin Tarantino. Popcorn deals with fictional movie director Bruce Delamitri, who, after winning an Oscar against all odds, is confronted with two serial killers, Wayne Hudson and his partner Scout, who have entered his house. Also present is Brooke Daniels and ex-Playboy who sees herself rather as an actress. As the serial killers hold the two hostage, Delamitri’s ex- wife Farrah and their daughter Velvet are also caught up in the situation. As the crisis continues, and people start dying, Wayne reveals his agenda: he wants Bruce to take responsibility for their killing spree, since they were inspired by his movies... Popcorn is about taking responsibility for one’s own actions, and how this has been lost in modern society, where everyone sues everyone else. It is also a thrilling modern play with gripping action and a disconcerting message.
