P.O.W.: Prisoners of War

P.O.W.: Prisoners of War is a Nintendo game by SNK where the object is to escape from the enemy's camp and destroy their leaders. Brass knuckles, knives, guns, and armor can be employed toward this goal. Despite the subtitle "Prisoners of War," P.O.W. is one-player only.

There are four levels of gameplay:

  • First Level: Escape from Prison Camp
  • Second Level: Attacking the Industrial Area
  • Third Level: Guerilla Attack in the Jungle
  • Fourth Level: Destruction of Communications Headquarters

    Comparison with Double Dragon

P.O.W. is much easier than Double Dragon for several reasons. In P.O.W., it is possible to kick enemies before they get close enough to attack, unlike Double Dragon, where Chin had the ability to quickly kick and knock the character down. In addition, in P.O.W., there are no falling stalactites or deadly cliffs to fall from, as there are in Double Dragon. Also, in P.O.W., enemies with machine guns do not actually fire them; they only attack with the butt of the gun, and when attacked, drop the gun for the character to pick up and use. In Double Dragon, by contrast, the enemy with the machine gun fires with devastating effect, and does not drop it when attacked. Lastly, P.O.W. allows infinite continues, while Double Dragon limits the player to three lives.

Because of the fewer types of attacks available (mostly limited to lengthy sessions of monotonous kicking and punching), and the infinite continues which make the outcome of the game a foregone conclusion, P.O.W. is often considered less fun to watch than Double Dragon.
