Pulaski County, Virginia

Geography

Pulaski County is the site of Claytor Lake State Park, which is located on Claytor Lake, a 4,500 acre, 21-mile long man made lake on the New River created for a hydroelectric project of Appalachian Power Company. It is named for W. Graham Claytor (1886-1971) of Roanoke, Virginia, a vice president of Appalachian Power and supervised construction of the dam and creation of the lake.

Demographics

There are 14,643 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.60% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,873, and the median income for a family is $42,251. Males have a median income of $30,712 versus $21,596 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,973. 13.10% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.90% of those under the age of 18 and 11.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
