Pulau Brani

Pulau Brani

Pulau Brani is located off the southern coast of Singapore, near Keppel Harbour. The island is sandwiched between the main island of Singapore and the resort island Sentosa. The island is linked by road to the Singapore main island via a causeway, Brani Terminal Avenue, which concurrently provides access to Sentosa.

The area of Pulau Brani is 1.22 km².

The name "Pulau Brani" means "Island of the Brave" in Malay.

Pulau Brani was selected to house a new naval base in the early 1970s. In those days, there were some settlements along the island's coast. In addition, there were the Pulau Brani Sports Club, the Pulau Brani Community Club and two primary schools - Tai Chong and Telok Saga.

Work on building the new naval base started with the first pile driven in on 17 Aug 1972. The entire project cost $35 million and was completed in Jan 1974. On 26 Jan 1974, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, current Minister Mentor, declared open the Singapore Maritime Command Naval Base on Pulau Brani. Singapore Maritime Command was later renamed the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). The naval base had a new wharf and a supply base complex added in 1983 at the cost of $16 million.

Part of Brani Naval Base later gave way to accommodate the expansion of Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), and moved to its modern high-tech base in Tuas in 1995. Some components of the RSN still functions from the Brani Naval Base today.
