Rhinitis

Rhinitis

Rhinitis is the medical term describing irritation and inflammation of the nose. Symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, congestion and irritation in the nose, eyes, throat and ears. It is related to and often occurs together with other disorders such as asthma and sinusitis.

Rhinitis can be allergic or non-allergic. Allergic rhinitis, also called chronic rhinitis, is one of the most common allergies. It can be seasonal, caused by outdoor agents such as pollen (pollen allergy is called hay fever), or perennial, caused by house dust mites, indoor mold etc. Non-allergic rhinitis, also called acute rhinitis, is caused by fumes, strong odors, smoke and other pollutants. Non-allergic rhinitis can also be caused by structural problems in the nasal passages, eg, deviated septum.
