Ricardo Reis
One of the main Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms. Ricardo Reis was born in Oporto in September 19th 1887 and was educated in a Jesuit school. He exiled himself to Brazil in in 1919 after the republic was first established in Portugal because he was of deep monarchic feeling. He was a doctor but he never needed to work to earn himself a living. His only occupation was in fact that of the poet. He was a neopagan and materialistic poet, who was inspired by classic and hellenic poetry such as Horace's Satires. His classic culture is very different from that of both Alberto Caeiro and Álvaro de Campos, the other two heteronyms born from Pessoa's work. In fact his style was more symilar to that of Walter Pater. Ricardo Reis is the main character of the novel O Ano da Morte de Ricardo Reis (The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis) by José Saramago.
