Samuel Adler

Samuel Adler (1809-1891) was born in Worms Germany, and became a rabbi in 1842. He was a leader of the (see:) reform judaism
movement. In 1857 he emmigrated to the United States to become the head rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in New York, a position which he held until 1891. Adler continued to hold services in German, for his congregation of mostly families of prosperous German immigrants.

While at Emanu-El he continued to play a leading role in the reform movement, including writing a new prayer book.

His son Felix Adler was the well known founder of the Ethical Culture Society.
