Sea anchor
A sea anchor is unlike a normal anchor, in that it is not made of metal and does not dig into the sea floor. Instead, it is shaped much like a parachute or cone. It is fed out from the ship or boat so that it fills under water. A long line (typically between ten and fiften boat lengths) is attached to the sea anchor and the bow of the boat or ship. A sea anchor is typically utilised in heavy weather or storms, and it stabilises the vessel allowing it to ride out the worst of the storm by keeping the bow up into the wind.
