It is located about 20 km west of central Jakarta, in Cengkareng in Banten province. The airport became operational in the mid 1980s, replacing the old airport at Kemayoran in north Jakarta.

It has two independent parallel runways separated by distance of 2,400 meters connected by a cross taxi-way.
