South American Championship 1935

South American Championship 1935

The thirteenth edition of the South American Championship was held in Lima, Peru from January 6 to January 27, 1935.

After the 1930 World Cup in whichs final match Uruguay defeated Argentina by four goals to two, the Argentine team broke football relations with their Uruguayan counterpart, claiming to have been heavily pressured, and that there even were aggressions directed to them, before and during the match.

After six years passed from the previous edition, it was decided to continue with the tournament, but it was declared extra (no throphy was disputed) in order to appease things up. This tournament also served as a qualifying process for the 1936 Summer Olympics that were to be held in Berlin, Germany.

This tournament is called Copa América since 1975.

The participating countries were Argentina, Chile, Peru national football team, and Uruguay.

Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay withdrew from the tournament.
