St. Matthew's United Church (Halifax)

1479 Barrington Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Oldest Protestant congregation in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Started as Dissenting Protestant Worship House, in December 1749.

First building was constructed at Hollis and Prince Streets in 1754.

In 1751, a glebe of 65 acres was awarded, but revoked during the War of Independence over comments and prayers uttered by their minister, Rev. Seecombe.

Follwing the end of this war, Loyalists and Scots settled in greater numbers in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 1787, an agreement was made to adhere closer to Church of Scotland polity. They formally joined the Church of Scotland in the 1830s.

In 1857, a fire destroyed this building, and a new site was acquired on Barrington Street, where the building remains.

George Monro Grant was Minister from 1863 - 1877.

Sir Sandford Fleming was an Elder in congregation.

Joined Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1875.

Grant is appointed to Kingston, Ontario as Principal of Queen's University, by the [Presbyterian Church in Canada 's General Assembly, meeting within the congregation in June 1877.

Congregation joins United Church of Canada in 1925.

250th Anniversary celebrated in 1999, with new history book.

Still active congregation in Downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia
