Stockwell tube station
Stockwell tube station is a London Underground station in Stockwell in the London Borough of Lambeth. It is situated between Vauxhall and Brixton on the Victoria Line , and between Clapham North, and Oval on the Northern Line.
Stockwell station was opened on December 18, 1890 by the Prince of Wales later King Edward VII, as the most southerly station on the City & South London Railway -- London's first deep level tube railway. The tube trains ran north from Stockwell to a station at King William Street (now disused), which was replaced by a new station in 1926 at Bank. The C.& S.L.R platforms were rebuilt to a larger scale in 1926 when the line was extended to Morden. Stockwell is one of eight London Underground stations which has a deep-level air-raid shelter underneath it, this was constructed during the second world war.With the opening of The Victoria Line on July 23, 1971, the 1890 surface buildings were demolished and replaced by a rather non-descript structure. Stockwell Station is in Travelcard Zone 2 and is also served by bus routes:- 2,88,155,255,322,345 and the 355.
