Strzelecki Ranges
Strzelecki Ranges, also known as Strzelecki Hills is a low mountain range situated in the Gippsland region of south-eastern Australia between the Latrobe Valley to the north and Bass Strait to the south. It is named after Paul Edmund Strzelecki, a Polish born explorer, who led an expedition through this region in the 1840s. Temperate rainforest, populated by 90 metre tall Mountain Ash, originally covered the ranges but much of it was logged in the late 19th and early 20th century. Some of what remains has been protected inside the Tarra-Bulga National Park. The spectacular Grand Ridge Road winds through the ranges and provides picturesque views over the Latrobe Valley and to the south towards Wilsons Promontory. Settlers from Melbourne in the 1860s struggled to penetrate the area until the arrival of the Gippsland Railway in the 1870s. The highest peak is Mount Fatigue (581 metres.)
