Sula (novel)
Sula is a book by Toni Morrison about two friends, Nel and Sula, whose relationship examines the confusing mysteries of human emotions. The novel addresses ideas of "good" and "evil" and how the two, at times, seem to resemble one another. It is written in a very unique style. The author's perspective is very philosophical and at the same time painfully personal and insightful. Not only does she show the similiarity between good and evil, but she also shows how two women become one and the consequences that that fact has in their lives. There are so many themes in this book that one could dig forever in one's mind after reading it and continue to discover. "Sula" is a disturbingly real portrayal of what it means to be black, and, at that, a black woman, in America. It is also a disturbingly real presentation of life and values and will make any reader examine themselves more carefully.
