Sulfuryl fluoride
Sulfuryl fluoride (F2O2S)is a toxic inorganic gas developed by the Dow Chemical Company and sold under the trade name Vikane. It is mainly used as a structural fumigant insecticide to control dry-wood termites. It recently began use as a post-harvest fumigant for dry fruits, nuts and grains. For this use it is sold under the trade name ProFume. During application, the building is enclosed in an airtight tent and filled with the gas for 24 hours. The building must be ventilated for another 24 hours before occupants can return. Vikane is colorless, odorless, and leaves no residue. During the fumigation process, a warning agent similar to tear gas is first released into the building to ensure that no occupants remain. All plants and animals must be removed from the building and all food must be either removed or double-bagged in airtight plastic bags provided by the exterminator. Pest control experts claim Vikane is the only effective treatment for drywood termites. However, since it leaves no residue there's nothing to prevent termites from returning after treatment.
