Surf Lifesavers
Surf Lifesavers provide Lifeguard services on beaches in Australia. The 285 surf lifesaving clubs patrol over 300 beaches. Each year 11,000 rescues, 48,000 first aid treatments and 280,000 preventative actions are performed. Lifesavers are distinguished on the beach by red and yellow cloth caps worn on the head. The patrolled area of the beach is marked out with flags and beachgoers are encouraged to swim between the flags. Surf lifesaving clubs regularly hold carnivals where clubs compete with each other in a range of beach- and rescue-oriented events including combined swimming and running, surf ski and surf boar races. The youth arm of the clubs is known as Nippers, and holds similar events.
