Swamp pop
Swamp pop is a musical genre that was born in the honky tonks of southwestern Louisiana. This style of music was mostly played in an area stretching from Galveston, Texas east through Lake Charles, Louisiana, Jennings, Eunice, Opelousas, Lafayette, Abbeville, Erath, Delcambre, New Iberia, St Martinville, Jeanerette, Franklin, Morgan City, Houma, and into New Orleans, Louisiana. It is essentially a Caucasian adaptation of African American rhythm and blues. Bobby Charles Guidry's See You Later Alligator might be considered the first swamp pop tune. Swamp pop was spread almost single-handedly by one band, The Boogie Kings. At the height of swamp pop's popularity, over 100 nightclubs were stocked with swamp pop bands on the weekends. The likes of TK Hulin or GG Shin, a veteran of The Boogie Kings, may still be found belting it out as of 2004.
