Tara (Buddhist)
Tara, or Arya Tara, is a bodhisattva typically associated with Tibetan Buddhism. Tara is actually the generic name for a set of bodhisattvas of similar aspect. This may more properly be understood as different aspects of the same quality, as bodhisattvas are often considered metaphors for Buddhist virtues. The most widely known Taras are: - Green Tara, known for compassion
- White Tara
- Red Tara, of fierce aspect
- Black Tara, associated with power
- Yellow Tara
- Blue Tara, associated with anger
There is also recognition in some schools of Buddhism of twenty-one Taras. Some Tibetan Buddhists practice a mantra meditation called Tara Practice.
