Te Matua Ngahere

Te Matua Ngahere

Te Matua Ngahere is a giant kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand.

The tree's Maori name means "Father of the Forest". Although not as massive or tall as its neighbour Tane Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere is much stouter, with a girth of 18 metres (59 feet). As such it has possibly the thickest trunk of any tree in the Southern Hemisphere. There is no proof of the tree’s age, but it is estimated to be close to 2000 years old.

The tree is a remnant of the ancient subtropical rain forest that once grew on the North Auckland Peninsula.
