Terence MacManus
Terence Bellew MacManus (Born probably County Fermanagh, 1811; died San Francisco, January 15 1861). Irish revolutionary rebel. A successful shipping agent, he was sentenced to death for high treason for his part with William Smith O'Brien and John Blake Dillon at the engagement at Ballingarry in July 1848. The sentence was commuted to transportation for life, and he was transported to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) in 1849 on the Swift together with O'Brien, Thomas Francis Meagher and Patrick O'Donoghue. He escaped with Thomas Francis Meagher in 1852 and settled at San Francisco. He failed to re-establish his career as a shipping agent there and died in poverty. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, on 10 November 1861, after a huge funeral organised by the Fenian movement.
