The Charlatans (British band)The Charlatans (known in the United States as The Charlatans UK) is a British band. Originally formed in Birmingham by bassist Martin Blunt who recruited fellow West Midlanders Rob Collins on keys, John Brooks on drums, John Baker on guitar and Baz Ketley for vocals. Tim Burgess (from Cheshire) later replaced Baz and Mark Collins (from Manchester) eventually replaced John Baker, after Rob Collins' death Tony Rogers, also from the West Midlands, took his place on the keys to front the current line up.The group established Dead Dead Good Records for the release of their debut single "Indian Rope" in 1990. It proved an indie hit and the group soon found a label, Beggars Banquet off-shoot Situation Two, in time for "The Only One I Know", a pop hit. A further single, "Then" and debut album Some Friendly were released later that year to great commercial and critical acclaim. The Charlatans were forced to add UK to their name for an American tour due to competing claims by a 1960s rock band also known as The Charlatans. Personnel changes caused a long gap before the release of Between 10th & 11th, however two between album singles, "Me. In Time" and "Over Rising" were released during this period. The third album, Up to Our Hips, was a return to form. The band's fifth album (Tellin' Stories) was released in 1997 to strong sales and reviews. Since then they have released Us and Us Only in 1999, Wonderland in 2001, Songs from The Other Side (a collection of b-sides and remixes) in 2002, Live It Like You Love It (a live recording) also in 2002, and Up at the Lake in 2004.
