Tozai Line (Kyoto)

The Tōzai Line (Kyoto) (京都市営地下鉄東西線 Kyōto shi-ei chikatetsu tōzai-sen) is a metro (subway) line that runs from the southeast of the city to a point east of the center, then east-west (tōzai) through the center of the city of Kyoto. The Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau operates this, and the Karasuma Line, as well as buses. The present terminal stations are Rokujizo Station in Uji and Nijō Station in Nakagyō-ku, Kyoto. It handles an average of 120,000 passengers daily.

The stations are wheelchair-friendly, with elevators, narrow gaps between platform and train, and no height differences at places like rest rooms. Each station has a color code for easy recognition. All platforms on the line are islands; have doors separating the platform from the tracks.

The distance of the present line is 15.1 km with a gauge of 1,435 mm. The entire length is double-track. Trains are electric, operating on 1500VDC.

On October 12, 1997, the section the line from Daigo to Nijo opened. On November 26, 2004, the line from Daigo to Rokujizo opened.

Some transfers require a brief walk to a nearby station.

An extension is under construction from Nijo Station. An extension to Nishiōji Station and the terminal at Tenjin-gawa Station is slated to open in 2007.

Some trains of the Keihan Keishin Line operate on the line between Misasagi and Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae stations.

Daigo Station: Daigo-ji, a splendid Buddhist temple with a fine pagoda and a beautiful Japanese garden; connections to Toyotomi Hideyoshi

Kyōto Shiyakusho-mae Station: Kyoto City Hall; nearby, the rebuilt Honnoji, the original of which (in another part of the city) burned in the treacherous attack by Akechi Mitsuhide against Oda Nobunaga
