Ultop


Ultop is a traditional toys. It's made from bamboo. Small size bamboo with diameter around 2-5 cm which is have funnel inside. If we want to make Ultop, find one piece of small bamboo. Cut on two edge of bamboo until you can see both of edges through funnel. And then prepare rod (from a piece of wood or branch of wood)with the diameter slightly less then diameter of bamboo funnel. Usually we add some housing for the rod made of bamboo which is one of its edge without hole. Then insert the rode into the bamboo funnel through the hole of the other edge. And then try to looking for some grain of fruit which it's size slightly larger than diameter of bamboo funnel. Put the grain into the funnel and then try to push with the rod. And then push the grain as hard as you can do. And then you can see the grain out from the other adge of bamboo and become like a bullet lose from pistol or revolver.But of course in a less speed. And usually we can hear sound of small explotion when the grain force out from ultop.

Ultop frequently playing by childreen (especially boys) in Batak Highland.Batak Highland is part of Northern Sumatra Province, INDONESIA. There are many creative children who can make their own toys. They do not depend on gift from their parents to have toys. Beside Ultop toy, they can make car toy from piece of wood and using a very simple tools to convert it become a fungky car toy. They also full of imagination about how to play football happily although they don't have good access to get ball to be played. The boy use some spere fruit called Utte Albung(Utte albung is a kind of orange with very big size and relatively light when it is un-ripe).
