University of Bologna

The University of Bologna (Universitą di Bologna, UNIBO) is a university in Bologna, Italy. The university received a charter from Frederick I Barbarossa in 1158. In the 19th century, a committee of historians led by Giosuč Carducci traced the birth of the University to 1088. The University celebrated its 900th year anniversary in 1988. This makes it perhaps the first and most long-lived university in the western world, and globally only the University of Karueein in Fez and Cairo's Al-Azhar University are older. The University of Bologna is historically notable for its teaching of canon and civil law.
