Uzumaki is a horror manga by Junji Ito. The manga is published in English by Viz Communications.
It has been made into movie with a simpler story line.
With a beautiful highschool girl as the protagonist, the people of a
small town in Japan become variously fascinated with, terrified of, and consumed by the countless occurrences of natural and artificial spirals to death.
The obsession with spirals is accompanied with people's obsession in extreme with various things, such as artists' with perfect forms; youngsters' with the ability to attract eyeballs; timid people's fear of dizziness of ratating; unsupported lovers' wish of not being separated. And people always have their terrible ends with sprials. Apart from the ghastly, convincingly-drawn deaths, the book projects an effective atmosphere of creeping fear as the town's inhabitants become less and less human, and more and more bizarre things begin to happen.
