Van Buren, New YorkVan Buren is a town located in Onondaga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,667. The Town of Van Buren is in the western part of the county. HistoryThe town was part of the Military Tract of 1789 used to pay off soldiers. The Town of Van Buren was formed in 1829 from the Town of Camillus. GeographyVan Buren is south of the Seneca River. The New York State Thruway crosses the south part of the town. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.6 km² (36.1 mi²). 92.1 km² (35.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.52% water. DemographicsAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,667 people, 5,288 households, and 3,384 families residing in the town. The population density is 137.5/km² (356.2/mi²). There are 5,618 housing units at an average density of 61.0/km² (158.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.05% White, 0.80% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,288 households out of which 29.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% are non-families. 30.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.95. In the town the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males. The median income for a household in the town is $43,003, and the median income for a family is $50,724. Males have a median income of $37,230 versus $26,842 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,997. 6.6% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line.
