Varasd

Varasd is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary, autonomous region Croatia-Slavonia. Its territory is presently in northern Croatia. The capital of the county was Varaždin (Croatian, in Hungarian: Varasd).

Geography


Varasd county shared borders with the Austrian land Styria and the Hungarian counties Zala, Belovár-Körös and Zágráb (the latter two in Croatia-Slavonia). The river Drave formed its northern border. Its area was 2521 km² around 1910.

History


Varasd county became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 12th century. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia, the county is part of Croatia.
